Business owners who have employees that are regularly scheduled to work over 30 hours a week are required "to offer" those employee health insurance. The insurance company and the federal anti discrimination laws require this.

The employer is usually required by the insurance company, to pay at least 25% to 50% of the monthly employee health premium cost.

Those employees that are covered by other insurances from their spouse, partner, Veterans benefits, or other qualified plans can be waived and not purchase the insurance. It is recommended that the employer document this waiver in writing.

The insurance company will also require 50% or more participation of the remaining employees in order to offer the business a health plan.

The insurance company also allows the employees to add their families to the health plan.

The health plans are required by State law in Connecticut to be allowed to include employees working 20 to 30 hours a week. This is NOT required and the emplyer can decide whether to offer and include all employees working 20 to 30 hours.

Small business owners are with 2 to 50 employees have a guaranteed acceptance into the health plan of their choice. 1 employee businesses are not given this choice always. See sole proprietors here for more information.
